San Ruffino, Italy

This beautiful dome in Assisi could be seen from the terasse of our four story boarding house. The gourgeous view over the small city of Assisi with its cathedrals, churches and chapels inspired this watercolour of Assisi's oldest cathedral. It had been damaged by the earthquake of 1997 and was still surrounded by cranes and tackle blocks, some of which are indicated lightly at the rear of the dome. The late afternoon sun was the reason for using the almost indigo blue for the shadows as a contrast colour for the warm colours of the afternoon.
