View on Kaiserstuhl, Germany

This picture captures history as the beautiful oak tree framing the watercolour is no more. The view is on the lovely southern German landscape of the Vooralpen land with in the background the Kaiserstuhl. it was quite a challenge at that time to get it all on the picture, but as it captured this beautiful place on the Teck giving an outlook from 750 meters and shaded by the tree, I am very happy with the result.

Rethimnon, Greece

This old Turkish fort above the city of Rethimnon in Crete caught my attention as an object to draw. The picture is somewhat memorable for me as I had kind of a quarrel with my travelling friends. Once the drawing was finished the quarrel somehow had resolved itself without anybody having said a word. The nice part of the picture is the palm tree growing from the old well, happily the Turkish fort is not accommodated any more and the copula is only a remnant of earlier and darker times.

Reschenpass, Austrian Alps

The Reschenpass picture was made during travelling by car through Austria looking at the ever changing landscape. This is a much nicer route than the freeway and I do lots of sketches while my partner is driving. The little chapel built into these vast and inhospitable rocks caught my eye. The original sketch is made in a few fast minutes and later coloured with watercolour paints as wild as I remembered these alpine mountains to be.

San Ruffino, Italy

This beautiful dome in Assisi could be seen from the terasse of our four story boarding house. The gourgeous view over the small city of Assisi with its cathedrals, churches and chapels inspired this watercolour of Assisi's oldest cathedral. It had been damaged by the earthquake of 1997 and was still surrounded by cranes and tackle blocks, some of which are indicated lightly at the rear of the dome. The late afternoon sun was the reason for using the almost indigo blue for the shadows as a contrast colour for the warm colours of the afternoon.
